The Governor was the charismatic leader of Woodbury, a seemingly utopian community sheltered behind walls. He protected Woodbury's citizens from the walkers and provided them with housing, food, clothing, and perhaps most importantly, the semblance of life before the dead began to walk. However, Woodbury's peaceful facade belied the authoritarian, often brutal, methods employed by the Governor behind the scenes.

Philip Blake - better known as The Governor - was a survivor of the zombie apocalypse and one of the fiercest enemies of Rick Grimes' group.

Philip was a man of approximately 45 years of age,[1] with blue eyes and dark brown hair. Being someone who knew how to play the role he had created for himself, he paid attention to his appearance, as he always had to be presentable in public. His clothing was usually in shades of gray or blue and was always accompanied by a vest or jacket. After losing his right eye during a brutal fight with Michonne, he also began to wear an eyepatch to cover his scar.[2] The Governor was fond of golf[3] and whiskey.[4] He was also a good orator, easily able to extricate himself from situations using only his "charm" and also manipulate others into doing what he wanted.[5] He was skilled in hand-to-hand combat[6] and also had excellent handling of firearms.

History As a child, Philip had a bad relationship with his abusive father. The first time he smoked, he stole one of his dad's Lucky Strikes cigarettes, and while he and his brother were smoking crouched down in the garage, the man smelled the smoke and burst in, looking to beat them up. His brother took the blame to protect Philip and ended up with black eyes and a broken rib. Philip was also punished.[15]

The Governor was initially presented as a narcissist who saw himself as the future savior of civilization and was willing to resort to the most extreme measures to achieve that goal.[8] However, as time went on, he revealed a much deeper aspect of his broken psyche and proved to be a sadistic, dangerous, and unempathetic psychopath.[9] He lied pathologically and manipulated others as pawns in his disturbing game.[10] Although he tried to justify his actions by citing the psychological trauma caused by the loss of his family—especially Penny on two separate occasions[11]—several of his comments hinted that he had been carrying his dark nature long before the apocalypse began.

The Governor also possessed a fractured personality,[13] one side being the affable and charismatic facade that claimed to be willing to protect the people he loved; the other being insensitive, violent, and full of secrets, which he almost always kept masked but which was in reality the one he treasured most.
