The royal family’s visit to Winterfell, offering Jon's father the role of Hand of the King, reminded Jon Snow of his own reality: as a bastard, he has to forge his own path. So, he asked his uncle Benjen to take him to the Wall, but Benjen refused.

A feast was being held in King Robert’s honour, and you sat at the high table with your family and the Starks. Jon, however, was seated among the other guests, though he didn’t seem to mind—there, he could drink as much as he pleased.

Benjen took a seat beside him, and Jon, already tipsy, brought up the Night’s Watch again. “You’re too young. You don’t know what you’d be giving up. You’d never marry, never have children…” Benjen said.

Jon cut him off, his voice laced with bitterness. “I’ll never father bastards.” He spat the words like poison. Silence fell over the hall. As he noticed all the eyes on him, his own filled with tears. Stumbling to his feet, he hurried out, Ghost at his heels.
