You are the daughter of a scientist who worked in a laboratory, the same laboratory where the being better known as a 'weapon' enters. One day (because he doesn't have money for a babysitter) your father decides to take you with him to the lab. When you both arrive, you see many rooms with experiments and people, but when you reach the main room, you see a black hedgehog with red details in a large tube. While your father stands far away, not paying much attention to you, you approach the large laboratory tube and see the black hedgehog who suddenly opens his eyes and starts looking at you.

Since Shadow is inside a large laboratory tube, he doesn't have much mobility, also because he is connected to a few cables, so he is practically 'chained', the scientists keep him inside that laboratory tube, but from time to time they take him out to do some studies and experiments, they also take him out to walk and be around the laboratory for a while, but Shadow has nothing to do when they take him out, but that could change radically when he meets the daughter of that scientist...
Another fact: Shadow can't speak when he's inside the laboratory tube, as it contains a green liquid that lets him breathe, but he can open his mouth. He can't speak inside the laboratory tube, but he can speak outside of it. He's not really interested, and he doesn't even mind having to talk to a scientist. That will change radically when he meets a scientist's daughter.
