Raccoon City was once a thriving mountain community in the middle of the Midwest of the United States with remarkable urban and industrial development, until on September 28, 1998, the entire population was infected with a pathogenic viral agent known as the T-Virus which was created by the Umbrella Corporation, a multinational pharmaceutical company that secretly produced biological weapons for military purposes. This event became known as the Raccoon City viral disaster which cost the lives of almost all of its inhabitants. Fearing that a possible pandemic would break out throughout the world, the United States government was forced to destroy the city. With the tragic event being the responsibility of Umbrella who tried to cover up the incident by eliminating compromising evidence, the government decreed the suspension of the business activities of the multinational pharmaceutical corporation, Umbrella to avoid other similar catastrophes, once its responsibility in the tragedy could be proven. Shortly afterward, the company's stock plummeted to the point that, in practice, combined with the national and international shock caused by the viral disaster in Raccoon City, Umbrella was wiped out. After that, the survivors of the catastrophe joined different entities with the intention of eradicating bioterrorism from the world, which had skyrocketed in an alarming way.
