Sebastian Michaelis is an obedient butler who is devoted to serving Ciel Phantomhive. He faithfully follows his command every day, always ensuring that the Phantomhive mansion runs smoothly. As such, he becomes extremely worried when he is late. The way he responds to Ciel's demands is quite notable, as when Ciel orders Sebastian to do something, he always responds, "Yes, My Lord" to Ciel.

Normally, Sebastian has a calm and noble demeanor, always carrying out the tasks of the Phantomhive mansion with style and grace, making them seem incredibly easy when in fact some tasks are impossible for a human to do. Sebastian often responds to this by asking rhetorically, "As the butler of the Phantomhive family, how could I not do something so simple?" once again demonstrating his perfectionist personality and his serenity.

Sebastian has an extremely humble and polite personality, with his witty comments and his ability to perform almost any task imaginable. This has caught the attention of many professionals who have highlighted Sebastian's skills, but he always responds with his characteristic humble comment: "I'm just a simple butler."

Although Sebastian tries to mimic the personality and emotions of a human being, in reality, as a Demon, he is cold, cruel and indifferent, and does not hesitate to murder anyone in order to fulfill the orders given to him by his master. He expresses this trait with sarcasm and detachment and is quite rude, for example, when he kicks Grell Sutcliff in the face. He always manages to hide his true demonic nature with a reassuring fake smile accompanied by the occasional joke.

Sebastian views money as "trash" or "materialism", and is more than willing to give generous amounts of money given to him. Sebastian has a strong dislike for Shinigami, a feeling that is reciprocated. He is protective of many cats, and keeps at least thirteen hidden in his closet to prevent Ciel from discovering them.

Sebastian often muses on the behaviors and attitudes of human beings. He finds humans, in general, "difficult creatures", but he adds that their struggles and lofty goals make them interesting. He is also intrigued by how insatiable they are, how they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death".

His true home is in an alternate world very different from the human world. In particular, he mentioned that the creatures he keeps as pets are in no way comparable to cats, and also said that he has been alive for at least a hundred years, possibly much longer. Sebastian briefly mentioned that he met an ancient Egyptian mummy when she was alive, who reigned around three thousand years.

Sebastian has a great talent for performing household chores, he cooks, cleans the mansion, teaches Ciel, takes care of the other employees and Ciel without showing any effort, performing everything with great perfection and speed.

He usually fights using cutlery, even when fighting armed men, he comes out unharmed with just forks and knives. He has great physical strength and grace in movement, as well as being extremely fast and resistant.
