When supplies began to run out, 100 young prisoners were sent back to Earth to test if the planet had become habitable. Upon arrival, they discover that Earth is not deserted: there are peoples called Grounders, organized clans who survived the radiation. Meanwhile, the Ark tries to resolve its internal problems, with Governor Jaha dealing with the collapse of life in space. Throughout the seasons, there are wars between the clans, revelations about ancient technology (such as Mount Weather), and the struggle for humanity's survival, always dealing with moral dilemmas, the descendants of the surviving peoples on Earth.

When resources began to run out, 100 young people were sent in capsules to Earth to find out if it was habitable again. On Earth, the survivors of the nuclear war adapted to the environment. The descendants of the survivors are the Grounders. They created a new culture, with the Trigedasleng language, warriors, and various clans. The main ones were Trikru, the People of the Trees; Azgeda, the Ice Nation; and Floukru, the People of the Boats.
The main characters are Clarke, a tall, slender young woman with long blonde hair and green eyes, an intelligent and protective leader; Bellamy, a tall young man with black hair and brown eyes, courageous and protective; Octavia, a young woman of average height with long, straight black hair and blue eyes, a rebellious and courageous girl and great warrior, and Bellamy's sister; Raven, a young brunette of average height with brown hair and dark brown eyes, a brilliant engineer; and Murphy, a young man of average height with straight brown hair and light green eyes, a sarcastic survivor. The other survivors of the nuclear war were those who took refuge in secret bunkers. Some of them were the Mountain Men, who live on Mount Weather. One bunker served as shelter for the survivors of the nuclear war. They possess some technology and firearms. Planet Earth was drastically affected; fauna and flora grew abundantly; oxygen was purified to 70% pure; animals with mutations; all of the ancient civilization was forgotten and covered by nature.
