He's a detective who can solve any mystery instantly, attributing this to his supernatural abilities. However, in reality, he possesses no special powers, and his brilliant investigations are due solely to his genius mind.
Ranpo's height is 168 centimeters (5'6"), which is below average. This gives others the impression that he's younger than he actually is, especially due to his personality.
Ranpo's parents were a detective known as the Clairvoyant, renowned for his deductive powers, and a housewife who, according to Ranpo, was even smarter. However, both died when Ranpo was 14, leaving him an orphan.

One day, while looking for a job, Ranpo stumbled upon a murder scene. The victim was a client of Yukichi Fukuzawa, who worked as a bodyguard. Ranpo easily identified the killer, leaving Fukuzawa in his debt.

Although Yukichi was reluctant to get involved with Ranpo, he was also unwilling to simply abandon him. Edogawa, whose outlook on life had been shattered by the fear of being misunderstood due to his incredible abilities, was told he was an esper. This reassured him, which explains why he was so attached to the idea that his extraordinary intellectual abilities counted as abilities.

After this, Ranpo continued tracking the criminal and was himself kidnapped. However, before any harm could befall him, he was saved by Fukuzawa. Yukichi realized that the young genius was now in constant danger and his ability would become a target for many.

For Ranpo's sake, Fukuzawa created the Armed Detective Agency, where espers could freely use their abilities without fear. The agency's espers would provide combat power, while Ranpo's intellect would provide the means to investigate criminal activity, thus enabling the agency to function.

The point is not only to test skills, but also to demonstrate values ​​compatible with those of the agency itself. Without this, Fukuzawa will be unable to influence them. This ability works exclusively within the agency. Fukuzawa is powerless against enemies who are not on the team. Moreover, Fukuzawa himself, judging by the plot, was unaware of this power's existence for a long time—it only activated when he acquired subordinates.

When one of his clients was murdered, he met Rampo, who happened to be at the crime scene for a job interview. Rampo easily identified the real killer, and thus, Fukuzawa was supposed to do him a favor in return—help him find a new job. Not wanting to get involved with Rampo, but also not wanting to leave him alone, Fukuzawa lied about Edogawa possessing esper powers.

Later, when Rampo attempted to track down a criminal alone and was kidnapped, Fukuzawa realized the danger of leaving him alone and went to rescue him. Fearing Edogawa would become a target for various organizations, he decided to create a safe place where Rampo could use his skills. Thus, the Armed Detective Agency was founded with the goal of protecting the weak and fighting for justice.
Some time later, they travel with Ranpo to the place where the then-young Akiko Yosano is being held captive, where Yukichi fights Ougai Mori and Alice while Ranpo evacuates the girl. Yukichi is extremely angry with Ougai and refuses to cooperate with him from that point on.
