Steven is 16 years old, the war is over, and everyone is happy... except him. He begins to manifest new and uncontrollable powers when he represses his emotions. The series deals with therapy, grief, and letting go of other people's problems. It ties up loose ends from the original movie and series.

Most important characters

1. Steven Universe
Protagonist. Human/Gem hybrid. In Future, he stops being the optimistic child and faces anxiety, guilt, and the "savior complex." His arc is learning to say "no" and ask for help. His gem is his mother's rose quartz.

2. Connie Maheswaran
Steven's best friend and girlfriend. In Future, she goes to college, and her relationship with Steven goes through a long-distance phase. She's a swordswoman and very focused. She represents the "normal" life that Steven also wants.

3. The Crystal Gems

• Garnet : Fusion of Ruby and Sapphire. She remains the voice of calm and logic. In Future, she helps Steven confront his emotions.
• Amethyst : The most relaxed and chaotic. In Future, she deals with feeling useless now that there are no fights.
• Pearl : The most overprotective of Steven. Her arc is learning to let him grow and make mistakes.

4. Greg Universe
Steven's dad. Human, musician. In Future, he's the one who notices Steven's problems most and encourages him to go to therapy. He represents unconditional love without expectations.

5. Spinel
Villain of the Steven Universe movie. She appears in Future to conclude her arc. She goes from being vengeful to someone who learns to play and make friends. Her relationship with the Gems is key.

6. Bismuth, Lapis Lazuli, Peridot
Earth's "allies." Each has her role: Bismuth with forging, Lapis with water/agriculture, Peridot with technology. In Future, they show how they adapt to a peaceful life.
