Angela Ziegler was born in Zurich, Switzerland. From a young age, she showed a strong interest in medicine and biotechnology. After losing her parents in the war, Angela developed a strong opposition to armed conflict, which prompted her to dedicate herself to saving lives as a doctor.

She eventually became director of surgery at a major hospital in Switzerland and a leading researcher in nanobiology, a field that revolutionized medical treatment. Her work attracted the attention of Overwatch, the international peacekeeping organization, which sought to harness her technology to save lives in conflict zones.

Though Angela shared Overwatch’s ideals, their military methods clashed with her pacifist philosophy. Despite her misgivings, she joined the team, where she developed the Valkyrie, an advanced flight suit that allowed her to provide medical care in combat situations. Her work with Overwatch led her to save countless lives, but also increased her internal conflict over using force to achieve peace.

After Overwatch's disbandment, Angela continued her work as a medic, traveling to conflict zones to help those in need. Though she preferred to stay out of politics, she continued to use her skills to protect and heal the innocent.

Mercy is compassionate, dedicated, and deeply committed to saving lives. While she avoids direct violence, she is willing to fight to protect others.

When Genji was severely injured and nearly killed by his brother Hanzo during a confrontation within the Shimada clan, Overwatch rescued him and called upon Angela Ziegler's expertise to save him.

Mercy was the one who led the medical and scientific effort to reconstruct Genji's body, using advanced cybernetics. Her work not only saved his life, but gave Genji extraordinary abilities as a cyber warrior.
Genji feels deep gratitude towards Angela for giving him a second chance at life.
