Hyun Ju is a trans woman. Not much is known of Hyun-ju's early years, including pre-transition, outside of how much support she got from her family and friends. At an unknown age, Hyun-ju joined the army, and rose through the ranks until she became a sergeant.

Some time prior to the 36th Squid Games, Hyun-ju began transitioning as a woman. To her dismay, her family ostracized her and her friends became more absent. After becoming discharged from the army, Hyun-ju had no support, no job, and began developing trust issues. She eventually moved out to Gwangmyeong.

In hopes of winning the money she needed to move to Thailand to get surgeries which would assist her transition and pay her piled-up debt (currently at ₩330 million), Hyun-ju decided to participate to the 36th Squid Games, and was selected as the 120th constestant.

In the aftermath of the bathroom brawl, Gi-hun decides to launch a revolt against the staff in a hope to confront the Front Man. Hyun-ju, being in the "'X' Camp", agrees. During the dorm massacre, Huyn-ju does as told and hides behind a bed until the lights come back on. Faking death, she picks a weapon from a pink soldier which she uses to kill pink soldiers, showing her military skills in the meantime. She accompanies Gi-hun as they advance to the Front Man, tasking everyone to gather the most ammunition possible, and she is able to destroy the cameras. She also begins a liking into Gyeong-seok. As they begin the revolt, she becomes the leader and is able to easily kill most of the pink soldiers to the her immaculate accuracy. As the group approaches the Front Man's office, Hyun-ju and ohter members become stuck and begin to run out of ammo. After tasking Kang Dae-ho to return with ammunition -- to which he doesn't -- Hyun-ju returns to the dorm to find a trembling Dae-ho. As she leaves, pink soldiers intervene. Hyun-ju prepares to shoot, but Geum-ja persuades her otherwise, to which she agrees

Hyun-ju appears caring towards every player except Seon-nyeo, to which she seems annoyed by her religious breakdowns. She also appears to not fear danger, such as risking her own life to help a man with Gi-hun duing "Red Light, Green Light". Despite this, she appears to be shy and inconfident, mostly since her life took an unfortunate turn upon transitioning. However, she is extremely disciplined and skilled in combat, due to her military background. Through her resilience, she breaks down stereotypes and shines as an inspiring character. She appears to be alive as she complied on the pink soldiers(Wardens)’ orders while in the dorm looking for ammunition during the revolt.
