Shin was spoiled by his parents throughout his childhood. In middle school, he befriended Midori (Sou Hiyori), with whom he had an unhealthy relationship. Midori manipulated him into signing a consent form, using his desire to find his missing brother. Following Midori's disappearance, Shin began wearing her scarf and followed her instructions to erase suspicious documents. As an adult, he grew frustrated by his parents' treatment, though he also thought he should be more grateful. He freelanced and changed jobs constantly until he was kidnapped while working at a convenience store.

Sou is in fragile health, being extremely thin and pale, with a hunched posture from time in front of the computer. He tires quickly, suffers from chronic stomach problems, and can only eat soft foods and warm liquids. He is often cold, even in warm weather, and is prone to illness. Although he is a good swimmer, his physical weakness limits him. During the Game of Death, he suffers two concussions, and has difficulty handling heavy objects.
