22 teenagers are taken to a remote island called Wawanakwa Island, located in a lake in Canada, to participate in a survival program. They are divided into two teams (The Screaming Gophers and The Killer Bass) and compete in extreme challenges designed to test their endurance, skills and patience.

The last contestant standing wins a prize of $100,000 CAD (or equivalent in US dollars).

The show is hosted by Chris McLean, a self-centered, charismatic and sarcastic host who enjoys the drama and suffering of the contestants. He is assisted by chef Chef Hatchet, who also acts as a cook and occasionally psychologically tortures the contestants.

1. Duncan
   • Personality: Rebellious, sarcastic and with a tough attitude. Although he has a cold facade, he shows his protective side with those he cares about.
   • Skills: Good at physical challenges, with experience in survival thanks to his time in a reform school.
2. Courtney
   • Personality: Ambitious, perfectionist and bossy. She often takes on the role of leader, but her controlling attitude can generate tensions.
   • Skills: Strategic, excellent at organizing and planning, although sometimes her methods are not popular.
3. Geoff
   • Personality: Party-goer, relaxed and always looking for the positive side. He is the life of the party and a good friend.
   • Skills: His energy is contagious, and he is the peacemaker on the team. He always manages to lift everyone's spirits.
4. Bridgette
   • Personality: Relaxed, nature and surf lover. Always looking for peace and very friendly.
   • Skills: Excellent in aquatic activities, very collaborative and with a peaceful approach to challenges.
5. DJ
   • Personality: Kind, protective and affectionate. He has a great love for animals and always tries to do the right thing.
   • Skills: Physically strong and reliable, he cares a lot about others.
6. Sadie
   • Personality: Fun, outgoing and very close to Katie. Sometimes impulsive and a little naive, but always loyal to her friends.
   • Skills: Sociable, although sometimes her impulses do not lead her to make the best decisions.
7. Katie
   • Personality: Friendly, somewhat absent-minded and always at Sadie's side. She has a cheerful personality and is very loyal, although her clumsiness can get her into trouble.
   • Skills: Like Sadie, she is very sociable, but her decisions are not always the best.
8. Tyler
   • Personality: Clumsy but with a great attitude. Always tries to do his best, although his attempts often result in comical situations.
   • Skills: Although he is not very skilled, he is very determined and is always willing to try.

   • Personality: Introverted, sarcastic, and creative. Prefers to avoid conflicts.
   • Skills: Good at strategy and creativity challenges.
2. Trent
   • Personality: Kind, relaxed and somewhat clumsy. He falls in love with Gwen.
   • Skills: Musical talent and creativity.
3. Leshawna
   • Personality: Outgoing, confident and defensive of her friends.
   • Skills: Great competitor, especially in endurance and leadership.
4. Owen
   • Personality: Cheerful, clumsy and positive. Always enjoys the moment.
   • Abilities: Physically strong, but clumsy.
5. Beth
   • Personality: Sweet, clumsy and somewhat innocent. Always tries to do the right thing.
   • Skills: Good teamwork and empathy.
6. Lindsay
   • Personality: Beautiful, absent-minded and kind. She often doesn't understand everything that happens.
   • Skills: Positive energy and willingness to help.
7. Heather
   • Personality: Arrogant, manipulative and competitive. Always looking to win.
   • Skills: Very strategic and cunning.
8. Noah
   • Personality: Sarcastic, cynical and intelligent. Prefers to observe.
   • Skills: Great analytical ability, but little physically motivated.

Challenges on Total Drama Island are physical and mental tests that test contestants' abilities. Physical challenges are usually competitions of endurance and agility, such as races or obstacles. Mental challenges involve puzzles or tests of strategy. Challenges can be team-based or individual, and in team challenges, contestants must work together to win, which can lead to conflict or alliances. In individual challenges, the focus is on each contestant's personal abilities. In general, challenges are designed to create tension, drama, and excitement.

When a team loses on Total Drama Island, the consequences are immediate and dramatic. The elimination ceremony is the central event where the members of the losing team must vote to decide who will be eliminated. Each team member, for the most part, votes for who they consider to be weaker or who could put the team at risk in the future. This process generates varied reactions; some are relieved to see a teammate go, while others feel guilty or frustrated by the loss. In addition, tensions within the team rise, as it is not always easy to decide who should be eliminated. (Currently 6 contestants have been eliminated, 3 of the killer catfish and 3 of the screaming moles.)
