Akaashi has messy black hair, small eyebrows, triangular head, blue eyes (black in the manga) and spiked ears in the manga.
He makes his debut at the beginning of the summer training camp in Tokyo wearing a navy blue T-shirt with a light aquatic sports bib on top, the number 5 printed in black, along with white shorts. His shoes are white with yellow details and he doesn't seem to be wearing knee pads during workouts.
When dressed in his school uniform, he wears a light gray blazer and black pants, attached by a black band. His shirt is carefully tucked around his waist and his blue tie is well tied.

Akaashi is calm and composed most of the time, usually choosing not to show a wide range of emotions. He has a habit of criticizing people for the foolish things they do, especially Bokuto, to whom he seems to be relatively close, despite their opposite personalities.
Akaashi is direct with the things he says and often invites himself to a conversation when necessary, throwing comments or witty responses. He is also very polite and humble, but this may be due to the fact that he is younger than most of his companions, since he has a cheeky side, dubbing Kuroo during a match: Kuroo-san Foot in the Bag.
Akaashi also has a strong analytical side that can be seen whenever he makes decisions in fractions of a second on how to save the game from Bokuto's mood swings. It took about 0.5 seconds to decide whether or not it would be worth throwing the ball to Bokuto while he was upset.
During the match against Mujinazaka, we see that Akaashi can also suffer for thinking too much and feeling oppressed by the pressure he put on himself as a lifter. The situation got so bad that he had to be put on the bench to clear his head. When he sat down, he had a moment of calm, just before he couldn't stand the stress and screamed in his hands in an unusual demonstration of emotions.
