Jean was born on October 5, 1967, the second daughter of John and Elaine Grey in New York City. From a young age, she displayed telepathic and telekinetic abilities, but her power was fully activated when she witnessed the death of her friend Annie Richardson. This traumatic event led Professor Charles Xavier to intervene, temporarily blocking her telepathic abilities so that she could develop without being overwhelmed by them. Jean was one of the first students to join Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, becoming part of the original X-Men team. Codenamed Marvel Girl, Jean fought alongside her classmates against various mutant and human threats. During this time, her relationship with Scott Summers (Cyclops) began to develop, though they also explore tensions and challenges, especially with the presence of Logan, who also has feelings for Jean.
