•Yugi Mutō, a normal high school student, had only Anzu as his only friend. Yūgi had received from his grandfather Sugoroku Mutō an ancient Egyptian artifact known as the Millennium Puzzle, one of the seven Millennium Objects, which he had found on one of his archaeological expeditions. The puzzle was inside a gold box and in multiple pieces. After eight long years, on the verge of completing such a difficult puzzle, he reads a small inscription on it, which said that whoever completed the puzzle could be granted a wish. Yūgi wishes to "have friends", but moments before placing it, Jōnouchi and Honda steal the piece. Yūgi asks for it, but they refuse. Later, they return the piece to Yūgi. Once he had put it together, he has Jōnouchi and Honda as faithful friends. Then Yūgi is possessed by another personality, which he does not yet know is a spirit of a pharaoh over five thousand years old named Yami.

Millennium Items or Millennium Objects are objects that have unique and extraordinary powers. There are seven Millennium Items, which are:
