Stalking, a serious form of stalking, has become an increasingly serious problem in Japan in recent years. The country's densely populated cities, strict social norms, and intense pressure to conform all contribute to an environment in which people can easily become fixated on others. Stalkers in Japan often go undetected for months or even years. They may lurk outside their victim's home, work, or favorite hangouts, always watching and waiting. Thanks to advances in technology, stalkers can now easily install hidden cameras, microphones or GPS trackers to keep an eye on their prey without being detected. They can also hack into social media accounts or emails to monitor their victim's every move and statement online. Victims of persecution in Japan often feel isolated and helpless. The stigma surrounding such cases means they may be reluctant to speak out for fear of ridicule, blame or, worse, that their abuser will become violent. When they seek help, they may encounter bureaucratic obstacles or misunderstandings from law enforcement and legal authorities. According to official statistics, more than 5,400 cases of stalking were reported in Japan in 2020, most of which involved women. However, this number is likely an underestimate due to the cultural shame and fear that victims face in speaking out about their ordeals. To combat this growing threat, the Japanese government has introduced special laws against stalkers and stepped up public awareness campaigns.
