Tom Riddle was born to the union of Tom Riddle Sr., a Muggle, and Merope Gaunt, a pureblood witch descended from Salazar Slytherin. His mother died shortly after giving birth and his father abandoned the family, so Tom grew up in a Muggle orphanage without knowing his true magical heritage. At age eleven, Tom received his admission letter to Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Slytherin house. From an early age, he demonstrated exceptional abilities in magic and showed a great interest in the Dark Arts. During his years at Hogwarts, he discovered that he was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, which apparently interested him quite a bit. Tom was known for excelling in various classes and for his good grades.
