He was originally a human man named Simon Petrikov who was engaged to a human woman Betty Grof. He managed to survive the Mushroom War and during its aftermath he met Marceline whom he took care of and befriended. However due to his crown he was forced to leave her.

In Come With Me!, he becomes human permanently again, without dying because he has a body that is more than 1000 years old, after entering the bowels of GOLB. However, in Adventure Time: With Fionna and Cake, despite becoming human again, he was extremely emotionally affected, after which he looked for a way to get Betty back, bringing Fionna and Cake instead, so together They go in search of the magic crown through the Multiverse to save their world while escaping from the Scarab
