Seki has low self-esteem growing up, which he compensates for by acting tough.

Seki starts smoking cigarettes in elementary school. After he and his friends explore the old miso factory, he witnesses an explosion caused by the cigarette he dropped, with Shimizu still inside. This case traumatizes Seki, causing a deep phobia of fire. He is beaten twice, once in high school and once in his twenties, when his attackers pull out a lighter and compare his reactions to those of a dog. He tells her girlfriend that he is attracted to her because he doesn't smoke her, and when he breaks up with her, he is more worried about her new smoking habit than about her cheating. Wada also agrees not to smoke in front of him. When Seki's family goes bankrupt, Shimizu suggests that he sell prepared lunches, but Seki is too afraid to use his family's portable stove. He later replaces the gas stove in his and his girlfriend's house with electric stoves. He confronts his fear of fire when Shimizu again becomes trapped in an exploding building with the Pegasus Ensemble and Seki goes in to rescue him. In the epilogue, he is even shown smoking a cigarette.
