Jason Todd, in his backstory, was the second Robin after Dick Grayson. Unlike Grayson, who had a more stable upbringing as part of a circus family, Todd's early life was marked by tragedy. He grew up on the streets of Gotham City, facing poverty and hardship. Batman discovered him trying to steal the tires off the Batmobile and took him under his wing, training him to become the new Robin.

However, Todd's tenure as Robin was fraught with challenges. He was more impulsive and prone to taking risks compared to his predecessor. This recklessness ultimately led to his demise at the hands of the Joker. Joker brutally beat him with a crowbar and left him to die in an explosion.

Jason's resurrection later on, through the Lazarus Pit, only intensified his trauma. He returned more violent and unstable as the Red Hood, harboring a deep-seated hatred and fear towards the Joker and the instrument of his torture, the crowbar. The memories of the pain inflicted by Joker haunt him, leading to recurring nightmares and a relentless pursuit of vengeance against the Clown Prince of Crime.
