The only way to officially leave Jehovah's Witnesses is to disassociate or be disfellowshipped, and both entail the same set of prohibitions and penalties. According to Wikipedia, Jehovah's Witnesses are encouraged to minimize social contact with non-members. This is because of perceived dangers of worldly association.
Current Jehovah's Witnesses are not to communicate with those who leave the religion. Once a person leaves the Jehovah's Witnesses religion, they are relegated to the status of an outsider.
