Size and appearance. The body length is 100–160 cm, the tail is up to 50 cm, and the height at the withers is up to 90 cm. Weight is usually 35–60 kg; in northern areas, wolves can be heavier (up to 80 kg or more). The colour varies: most often grey‑brown, but it can also have reddish, dark, and almost white shades. The fur is thick, with a dense undercoat.

Diet. These are typical predators: their main prey are ungulates (moose, deer, roe deer, wild boar, etc.). They also hunt smaller animals (hares, rodents) and, in times of hunger, may eat carrion. They hunt in groups, often chasing down their prey.

General behaviour. Wolves are pack animals. A pack usually consists of 3–8 individuals (sometimes up to 15), with a core family pair and their offspring from different years. The pack has its own territory, which the animals mark and defend. Wolves are known for their howling — it helps coordinate the pack over long distances, mark the territory, and locate each other. They also use facial expressions, body postures, and various sounds (growling, whimpering, etc.) to communicate.

Appearance. They are large, powerful, but harmoniously built dogs. They have long, thick fur with a soft, dense undercoat that protects them from the weather. A characteristic feature is the tricolor color: the main background is black, with red tan markings (on the cheeks, above the eyes, on the paws) and white markings (on the chest, muzzle, tip of the tail). The symmetry of the color is one of the signs of the purity of the pedigree.

Personality. Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their balanced, good-natured and devoted disposition. They become very attached to the owner (they often choose one main person), but at the same time they are loyal to all family members.
