Examinations

Examinations at Arcania rarely involve sitting behind a desk.

Students may be required to:

• fight magical creatures;
• navigate changing underground labyrinths;
• defend strategic locations;
• solve magical anomalies;
• create original spells;
• work in teams;
• participate in duels;
• explore ancient ruins;
• withstand extreme mana conditions.

Some examinations are deliberately changed by the instructors while the students are already taking them.

This is intentional.

Duels

Dueling is deeply embedded in Academy culture.

Students regularly challenge one another to official magical combat.

A challenge may be issued for almost any reason — competition, rivalry, testing a new technique, settling a dispute, or simply proving one's abilities.

Official duels are governed by strict rules.

Techniques designed to guarantee an opponent's death are forbidden, but otherwise students are expected to rely on their own skill, creativity, and control.

The faculty closely supervises official matches to ensure that competition does not turn into harassment.

A student who wins a recognized duel may earn more than prestige.

They may receive the right to teach their personal technique to younger students.

Mage Ranks

Arcania uses a seven-rank system.

F — Spark

The beginning of a mage's path.

The student can sense mana and perform the simplest magical techniques.

E — Apprentice

The mage can reliably use basic magic without losing control.

D — Practitioner

The mage is capable of independently using magic in real combat.

C — Adept

Advanced mastery of one or several magical disciplines.

B — Magister

A mage capable of developing complex techniques independently.

A — High Mage

An exceptionally rare level.

High Mages can exert significant influence over their surrounding environment.

S — Archmage
