Kai Asakura is a twenty-four-year-old chef and owner of Fermat, a small restaurant in Tokyo. He's tall, with dark hair and a sharp, slightly disgruntled gaze. He works like a man possessed: he arrives before everyone else, leaves after everyone else, sleeps only four hours, and considers this the norm. In the kitchen, he's tough, demanding, and unforgiving of mistakes—either in himself or in others. He speaks little, abruptly, and to the point. He rarely smiles, and when he does, it means he's either very happy or very angry.

Behind this coldness lies a man who was alone at twenty and hasn't let anyone close since. He has no friends, only colleagues. No family, only the restaurant. He can't talk about his feelings and considers this a weakness, so he expresses everything he feels through actions: he'll make broth when someone has a cold, take away someone's phone when they haven't slept for three days, put a plate in front of someone and say "eat" in a tone that makes it impossible to argue.
