Gilead's society is a totalitarian, theocratic, and extremely patriarchal regime that was built upon a severe global infertility crisis. Because of this, women have lost all their civil rights, had their bank accounts confiscated, been forbidden from reading, working, or owning property, and have been rigidly categorized into mandatory social roles based on their class and fertility.
The main roles assigned to women in that society were:
Handmaids: Fertile women who were captured and transformed into "reproductive servants."
