The Beginning. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war. Troops from Italy, Romania, Finland, Hungary, and Slovakia soon joined the Wehrmacht. Its essence was a lightning war (blitzkrieg): within a few months, defeat the USSR, destroy the main forces of the Red Army west of the Dnieper-Western Dvina line, and reach strategic frontiers (Moscow, Leningrad, Kyiv, Donbas).

Victory came at a tremendous cost. According to various estimates, the USSR lost between 24 and 27 million people (soldiers and civilians). Thousands of cities, villages, industrial enterprises, and collective farms were destroyed. The country lost a significant portion of its national wealth. At the same time, the victory was of enormous historical significance: Nazism was defeated, European countries were liberated from occupation, and the threat of human enslavement was eliminated. The war radically changed the geopolitical situation in the world. In 1945, the United Nations (UN) was founded. And in 1945–1946, the International Military Tribunal for Nazi war criminals was held in Nuremberg. This war will forever remain in the people's memory as both a terrible ordeal and an example of unity and courage.
