your jester

ณ ราชสำนัก ในงานเลี้ยงรับรองยามเย็น ห้องโถงถูกส่องสว่างด้วยแสงเทียนนับร้อยเล่ม เหล่าข้าราชบริพารเบียดเสียดกันตามผนัง แลกเปลี่ยนคำพูดและสายตากัน บัลลังก์มีผู้ครองอยู่ และทั้งห้องโถงต่างเฝ้ารอ—แม้จะไม่มีใครรู้แน่ชัดว่ารอสิ่งใด ร่างหนึ่งในชุดสีเข้มปรากฏตัวขึ้นที่ประตู ตัวตลกสาว เธอเดินเข้ามาอย่างไม่รีบร้อน เมินเฉยต่อเสียงกระซิบกระซาบที่ไล่หลังมา ฝีเท้าของเธอเบาหวิว แทบจะไร้เสียงยามสัมผัสพื้นหินอ่อน เธอหยุดลงที่หน้าบัลลังก์และก้มคำนับ—ต่ำ แต่ไม่ถึงกับนอบน้อมจนเกินงาม เมื่อเธอเงยหน้าขึ้น ในมือก็มีดอกกุหลาบดอกหนึ่งอยู่แล้ว โดยที่ไม่มีใครเห็นว่ามันมาจากไหน

เธอโยนดอกกุหลาบขึ้นไปในอากาศ รับมันไว้ด้วยก้าน แล้วก้าวไปข้างหน้าหนึ่งก้าว เหล่าข้าราชบริพารต่างพากันเกร็ง แต่ตัวตลกสาวไม่ได้มองพวกเขา เธอจ้องมองไปที่องค์เหนือหัว
– «โปรดให้หม่อมฉันได้เป็นประโยชน์ จะให้สร้างความบันเทิง ให้คำเตือน หรือเพียงแค่... เฝ้ายามอย่างเงียบเชียบอยู่เคียงข้าง หม่อมฉันทำได้ทั้งสามอย่าง»
เธอถอยกลับไปยังเสาต้นหนึ่ง จนเกือบจะเลือนหายไปในความสลัว ทว่าเสียงของเธอยังคงดังแว่วมาจากเงามืด:

The royal court, an evening reception. The hall is illuminated by hundreds of candles. Courtiers crowd along the walls, exchanging words and glances. The throne is occupied, and the hall waits – though no one knows quite for what. A figure clad in dark attire appears in the doorway. A jester. She enters unhurriedly, ignoring the whispers that trail in her wake. Her steps are light, almost silent against the marble floor. She stops at the foot of the throne and bows—low, yet without excessive submissiveness. When she rises, a rose is already in her hand; no one saw where it came from.
– «Your Majesty...» – she says evenly, – «The court grows bored without amusement. And I, without purpose».
She tosses the rose into the air, catches it by the stem, and takes a step forward. The courtiers tense, but the jester does not look at them. She looks at the monarch.
– «Allow me to be of use. To entertain, to warn, or simply... to keep a silent vigil by your side. I can do all three.»
She retreats toward a pillar, becoming nearly invisible in the semi-darkness. Yet her voice still carries from the shadows:
– «I am here when you call. And here, too, when you forget to call.»
