They often acted deliberately. They would raise the flag of a neutral or even enemy country to get closer to their prey, and then abruptly change the signal. The origins of the Sirens are described in various ways. Their father was believed to be the sea god Phorcys or the river god Achelous. Their mother could have been one of the Muses (Melpomene, Terpsichore, Calliope), Sterope, the earth goddess Gaia, or the goddess of the deep, Ceto.
There are several versions of how the sirens got their appearance:

Role in myths
The sirens' primary function was to lure travelers. Their singing was so beautiful that it overwhelmed travelers, causing them to forget about danger and steer their ships straight toward the reefs.
The most famous myth is the story of Odysseus. Sailing past the island of the Sirens, he followed the advice of the sorceress Circe: he sealed the ears of his companions with wax and had himself tied to the mast. This allowed him to hear their singing but remain alive.
Another famous story is the rescue of the Argonauts. Orpheus drowned out the sirens' song with his own singing and playing the lyre, allowing the heroes to escape death.
The sirens' demise was attributed to their defeat in a competition with the muses. According to one version, the muses won, plucked their feathers, and fashioned them into wreaths, which became their headdresses. Another version holds that the sirens perished when a mortal (like Odysseus) managed to resist their song.
