He had long, thick, jet-black curly hair that he often wore loose or carelessly pulled back in a ponytail. Dark brown, almost black eyes with a heavy, gaze. A face with a well-defined jaw, a large nose and always a slight unshaven (5 o'clock style stubble). Because of his Italian roots, he had dark, olive skin. Thick, stocky, bullish torso with broad shoulders. Not pumped up like a bodybuilder, but rather heavy and powerful, like a mechanic worker. His arms (especially his forearms) were densely packed with old classic tattoos—skulls, roses, eagles, and inscriptions made in Brooklyn tattoo parlors in his youth. Clothing: In real life — leather jackets, worn jeans, bandanas and heavy boots. On stage, he often wore a black T—shirt and jeans, without makeup and elaborate costumes, which made him the most "normal" among the others.

Sarcasm and ridicule: He had a very sharp, venomous New York humor. He constantly teased Peter Steele in interviews, and he did it with an absolutely serious face, driving Peter to white heat. It was his defensive reaction to the pathos.
Straightforwardness: Absolutely devoid of snobbery. He said what he thought, using simple, sometimes rude slang. He hated empty talk about "high art."
Workaholism: The habit of working with his hands (mechanic, postman) turned him into a pedant in the studio. He demanded the perfect sound of the barrel and could tune the volume for an hour while the others drank coffee.
He is known as a good-natured, hardworking and practical person. Behind the scenes of dark gothic metal, he stood out for his cheerful disposition, reliability and passion for car mechanics. His colleagues noted his modesty, professionalism and dedication to music.

Early years: Born on March 9, 1968 in Brooklyn, New York, to an Irish and Italian (Calabrian) family.
Early career: Started playing drums at the age of 15, influenced by KISS, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. He studied on his own, although he took short lessons from Twisted Sister drummer A.J. Perot.
Before music: Worked as a diesel mechanic and postman, was a devoted fan of old American oil cars (built a Dodge Superbee 440 '70).

Initially, Johnny worked as a roadie and Type O Negative drum technician. Later he took the place of the departed drummer.
