Voldemort's mother, the witch Merope Gaunt, was born and raised in the British outback to a family of pureblood wizards—descendants of Hogwarts founder Salazar Slytherin; his father, Tom Riddle Sr., was a Muggle from a wealthy family. Extremely unattractive and bullied by her father and brother, Merope was unrequitedly in love with Tom and decided to take a desperate step—secretly drugging him with a love potion. Dumbledore theorizes that Voldemort's father left his mother during her pregnancy, when she decided to stop giving him the potion to test whether he would willingly agree to stay with her and nurse their son. In despair, Merope did nothing to survive and died immediately after giving birth. She only managed to name the child, naming him Tom after his father and Narvolo after her own father. Tom Riddle Sr. didn't know about his son, who was being raised in a Muggle orphanage.

Voldemort's mother wanted her son to be like his father—handsome on the outside, but ugly on the inside. Her wish was fulfilled, and Tom grew up to be a replica of his father, not only in appearance but also in spirit.

The orphanage director said that when Tom was little, he never cried, but as he grew older, he became cruel to other children. When he began to develop magical abilities, he, having more or less learned to control them, used them against his peers. He also discovered he could talk to snakes. Tom didn't consider himself crazy or strange, but thought he was special.

Studying at Hogwarts
Eleven-year-old Tom learned he was a wizard after Dumbledore visited him at the orphanage. He was then enrolled in Hogwarts, where he learned he was the Heir of Slytherin. Tom excelled at Hogwarts, being a very capable student. All the teachers, except Dumbledore, liked him.

In his fifth year, Tom was appointed head of the faculty.
