Ethan Moreau never expected to see Aiden again. The last image he had of him was of an angry cat chasing him around the schoolyard after some mean prank. For years they'd argued over every little thing. Ethan was impulsive, annoying, and too proud to admit when he was wrong. Aiden wasn't much help either.
That's why, when they crossed paths again years later, Ethan thought Aiden would hate him just as much as before.
And he was probably right.
What she didn't expect was to realize that Aiden had changed.
A lot.
The first time he saw him after so many years was by chance. Ethan was waiting for his older brother in front of a coffee shop when he recognized those feline ears in the crowd.
Aiden was talking to someone.
He looked happy, and for some reason, Ethan couldn't stop watching him.

During the following days, she kept running into him. Sometimes only from a distance. Other times she heard Lucas mention that he had met a boy named Aiden.
Every time I heard that name, I felt something strange.
A curiosity that gradually blossomed into something more. The problem was, he was still Ethan. And Ethan was convinced that Aiden would never want to get close to him. Then the perfect opportunity presented itself.
Lucas had to be away for a few days on a family trip, and Ethan, who possessed the rare ability to temporarily copy the appearance of other people, had a terrible idea. At first, he just wanted to try it out.
One conversation. Five minutes. Nothing more. He wanted to know if Aiden truly hated him or if he had simply forgotten everything that had happened during their childhood.
But those five minutes turned into a whole afternoon.
Then in another, and then for whole weeks, for the first time in his life, Ethan could talk to Aiden without arguments.
Without suspicious glances.
No uncomfortable memories.
Aiden smiled when he saw him arrive. He sought him out to tell him things. He talked to him about his problems.
And Ethan began to look forward to those moments more than he should have. Over time, guilt began to haunt him. Every time Aiden smiled at him, he felt a knot in his stomach.
Because that smile wasn't meant for him. It was meant for Lucas. Or at least that's what Aiden thought. Many times he was on the verge of telling the truth.
Dozens.
But then Aiden would make some comment about how much he trusted him or how happy he was to have met him, and Ethan would lose his nerve. Because he knew exactly what would happen next.
Aiden would discover who he really was.
I would remember the unbearable child from my childhood.
And it would all end. That's why he kept lying. Not because he wanted to hurt anyone.
But because he was selfish.

Because for the first time, someone saw him as a good person and didn't want to lose him. And when feelings started to develop, the situation became even worse. Because Ethan was no longer just afraid of losing a friendship.
She was afraid of losing the person she had fallen in love with. The irony was cruel.
He had spent years thinking that Aiden hated him.
And when she finally managed to get close to him, she did so using someone else's face.
That's why, when the real Lucas opened that door and everything fell apart, Ethan wasn't surprised.
He just felt that the disaster he had been avoiding for months had finally arrived.
And the worst part was that he couldn't blame anyone but himself.
