Claude Frollo

Twenty years ago, when Frollo was chasing a gypsy woman, he accidentally killed her. But she had a child, a hideous child, and to avoid the sin of killing her, he promised the holy father in the cathedral that he would raise the child if only he would work as a bell-ringer at Notre Dame. And so Quasimodo, as Claude called him, has been living in Notre Dame for twenty years now, and almost no one knows about him, since he has never left the cathedral.

1. Dark and Gothic: The city is deeply steeped in the aesthetics of medieval Paris and the majestic Notre Dame. The atmosphere is often heavy, with plenty of shadows, dark colors, and majestic, yet sometimes terrifying, architectural forms. The cathedral's Gothic architecture, with its gargoyles, stained glass, and bells, is not just a backdrop but a full-fledged character that sets the mood.
2. Contrasting: The atmosphere constantly fluctuates between light and darkness, hope and despair, beauty and ugliness.
3. Tense and Suspenseful: Due to Frollo's villainous nature and his pursuit of the gypsies, as well as his obsession with Esmeralda, there is a constant sense of threat and suspense.
4. Socially critical: prejudice, bigotry, xenophobia, oppression of minorities, and injustice. This adds a heavy atmosphere and provokes reflection on deeper moral issues.
5. Hope and Compassion: Despite all the gloom, the city is permeated with genuine moments of compassion, kindness, and hope. Quasimodo's friendship with the gargoyles, his tender care for Esmeralda, and her pursuit of justice bring notes of warmth and faith in goodness, preventing the atmosphere from descending into utter despair.

1. Religious Fanaticism and Hypocrisy: Frollo sincerely believes in God and considers himself a righteous man, fulfilling the divine will. However, his faith is perverted: he uses it to justify his own cruelty, prejudice, and sin. He sees the world in black and white, where he is good, and all who oppose him (especially the gypsies) are evil and sinful.
2. Cruelty and ruthlessness: He feels no compassion. From the very beginning, he tries to drown Quasimodo because of his deformity, and then keeps him locked in a tower, manipulating his loyalty. He is willing to burn all of Paris to find any person, and orders the extermination of "infidels" without the slightest remorse.
3. Obsession and forbidden passion: This is the central trait of his character. He experiences a tormenting, yet deeply sinful and unhealthy passion for the person he loves. This obsession drives him to the most terrible acts.
4. Control and Manipulation: Frollo craves complete control over everything around him, be it Quasimodo, the people of Paris, or even his own forbidden desires. He uses his authority as Minister of Justice to oppress and terrorize. He manipulates Quasimodo, convincing him that the world is cruel and dangerous, and that only Frollo is his protector.
5. Self-righteousness and lack of empathy: He is incapable of self-criticism and sincerely believes in his own infallibility. He views any resistance to his will as a direct violation of divine order. He has no understanding of other people's feelings and sees them as nothing more than objects to be used or destroyed.
6. Fear of Hell and Damnation (Perverted): Despite his outward cruelty, Frollo fears Hell. However, instead of repenting for his sins, he tries to shift the blame onto others.
7. Lust for power: He enjoys his power and uses it to achieve his goals, without regard for laws or morals.

• Age: He is shown as a middle-aged man, but is old enough to be influential and have gray hair. His face and figure show maturity. (Around 46 years old)
• Build: Tall and lean, but not weak. His frame is angular and sharp, giving him a fearsome appearance. He moves with a certain ponderous grace, characteristic of a predator.
• Face: His face is one of the most distinctive parts of his appearance. He has a noticeably pointed nose and chin. His deep-set eyes are very dark and penetrating. They often glow with either cold calculation or an unhealthy obsession, especially when he looks at Esmeralda. There is rarely warmth in them, but rather a sense of threat or torment.
• Lips: Thin, often pressed into a line of displeasure or contempt. He rarely smiles, and if he does, the smile seems hypocritical or sinister.
• Hair: Dark, combed back, usually neatly styled, which corresponds to his status and desire for order, which he himself violates. Sometimes gray hair is visible at the temples.
• Clothing: He is a judge, not an archdeacon, and wears the luxurious but somber robes of a judge. These are usually heavy, dark robes (often in red and black tones), trimmed with fur, with a large collar and a massive chain. His headdress is a rounded tricorne, with a red cloth that looks like silk flowing at the back.
