Gilderoy Lockhart
Appearance: Very handsome, with wavy blond hair, a perfect smile, and bright white teeth. He always wears brightly colored robes.
Personality: Vain, egocentric, and fraudulent. He is a charlatan who takes credit for others' achievements and is completely incompetent as a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Rubeus Hagrid
Appearance: Enormous (over 2 meters tall), with a matted black beard and hair, and black, beetle-like eyes. He wears a mole-fur coat and enormous boots.
Personality: Kind, loyal, and passionate about magical creatures. He's clumsy and somewhat naive, which gets him into trouble, but he has a huge heart and is very protective of Harry.
Draco Malfoy
Appearance: Slim, with almost white platinum blonde hair, cold gray eyes, and an arrogant expression. He dresses elegantly.
Personality: Arrogant, malicious, and prejudiced against "Mudbloods." He is Harry's rival and uses his family's influence to intimidate, though deep down he is a coward.
Ginny Weasley
Appearance: Small for her age (11 years old), long, straight red hair, brown eyes, and freckles. She is shy and blushes easily around Harry.
Personality: Sweet, brave, and passionate. In this book, she is a victim of manipulation, but she shows her strength of character and her childhood crush on Harry.
Dobby (the house-elf)
Appearance: Small, with large bat-like ears, huge green eyes, and a pointy nose. He wears a dirty pillowcase.
Personality: Loyal, kind but clumsy and dramatic. He acts strangely out of a desire to protect Harry, although his "help" usually makes things worse.

Harry Potter
Appearance: A 12-year-old boy, thin and somewhat lanky, with messy black hair that he never combs, bright green eyes, and a lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. He wears round glasses.
Personality: Brave, loyal, and with a strong sense of justice. In this book, he feels insecure (unsure whether he belongs in Gryffindor or Slytherin), impulsive, and protective of his friends, but also more aware of his connection to Voldemort.
Ron Weasley
Appearance: Tall for his age, thin, with bright red hair, freckles all over his face, and large ears. He wears old clothes handed down from his brothers.
Personality: Loyal, funny, and somewhat insecure due to being the "second son" in the family. He's Harry's best friend, afraid of spiders, but always willing to join him on any adventure (even blowing up the family car).
Hermione Granger
Appearance: Very curly, abundant brown hair, brown eyes, large teeth (which are fixed later). She is neat and keeps her books perfectly organized.
Personality: Extremely intelligent, studious, and logical. She's the voice of reason in the trio, but also bossy and a perfectionist. In this book, she shines at solving riddles and creating Polyjuice Potion.
Tom Riddle / Lord Voldemort (young)
Appearance: Tall, handsome, black hair, pale skin, and piercing dark eyes (in his 16-year-old version within the diary). He later transforms into the reptilian version of Voldemort.
Personality: Charismatic, manipulative, ambitious, and cruel. He is the true antagonist: cold, lacking empathy, and obsessed with blood purity.
Albus Dumbledore
Appearance: Tall, thin old man, long silver beard and hair, bright blue eyes behind half-moon glasses.
Personality: Wise, calm, mysterious, and deeply kind. He trusts people and always seems to know more than he lets on, although he is absent for part of the time in this book.

The Chamber of Secrets is a legendary, hidden room built by Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts, over a thousand years ago. Slytherin believed that only pure-blood wizards (from magical families) should study at the school and distrusted "Muggle-borns" (born to non-wizards).
Before leaving Hogwarts due to disagreements with the other founders (Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff), Slytherin created this secret chamber deep within the castle. Inside, he imprisoned a basilisk (a monstrous giant serpent whose gaze kills instantly and whose venom is lethal). Legend says that only the true heir of Slytherin could open the Chamber and control the monster to "purify" Hogwarts by eliminating the Muggle-born students.
In the book, the Chamber is reopened in the present day, and messages appear on the walls (“The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir, beware”). Several students (and a cat) are petrified. Harry, Ron, and Hermione investigate the mystery, which is connected to an old diary, Tom Riddle, and Harry himself (who can talk to snakes, making him a suspect).
