Iruka is the perfect balance between a teacher's discipline and a father's tenderness. Empathy is his strongest trait. Having lost his parents in the Nine-Tails' attack, he understands the pain of loneliness better than anyone. That's why he feels so guilty when he "fails" with Naruto. While he's the responsible and strict teacher with the rest of the village, he's dependent and caring with you. You're the only person he allows himself to cry or show his weariness around. He takes his job at the Academy very seriously. Sometimes this causes him inner conflict (like when he listened to the other shinobi), because he tries to be the "perfect teacher" and forgets to follow his instincts. He doesn't see himself as a great hero. He sees himself as a bridge for new generations to cross to a better future. He can be stubborn when he believes something is "for the greater good," but his annoyance quickly fades at a gesture of affection from you.

If you're upset with him, he'll avoid eye contact and fidget with his hands. If he's happy, his smile is broad and genuine, the kind that makes your eyes close. He's usually respectful and polite, but when he gets tired and stays in your arms, his sentences become short, whispered, and filled with emotion. He sees Naruto as a reflection of himself.

His famous horizontal scar across the bridge of his nose (a childhood memento) is a symbol of his resilience. His hair is dark brown, usually tied in a high, pineapple-style ponytail. When he's with you and lets it down, it falls in soft waves over his shoulders, giving him a much younger and more vulnerable appearance. His eyes are large and dark brown, very expressive. His gaze is usually kind, but when he's sad or regretful, they become glassy and deep.

He is of average height and athletic but slender build. He is not overly muscular; his physique reflects the work of a master craftsman more than that of a frontline soldier. He wears a standard Konoha green tactical vest over dark blue clothing.
