Social hierarchy: Strictly enforced class distinctions. Social behavior, clothing, and leisure activities clearly indicated social standing (aristocracy, gentry, yeomanry, commoners).

Social norms: Reputation, decorum (especially in the middle and upper classes), and adherence to conventions were highly valued. Public displays of emotion were restrained.

Everyday life:

· Upper class: Visits, social gatherings, the London season, attending theaters and assemblies, reading newspapers, and discussing politics.
· Middle class (increasing influence): Pursuit of education, business activity, emulating aristocratic manners, visiting coffeehouses (centers of communication and news).
· Commoners: Heavy physical labor, living within the local community, visiting pubs, attending public festivals.

Communication: An abundance of formal titles and ceremonies in speech between different classes. Correspondence was an extremely important form of communication for the literate.

Religion: Church attendance on Sundays was a social norm and an obligatory ritual demonstrating trustworthiness.

Family and Gender: Patriarchal family. Women's role was to manage the household and raise children. Marriages among the upper classes were often arranged to preserve or increase wealth.

Leisure: For the elite, hunting, horse racing, and gambling were common. For city dwellers, sports competitions (boxing, horse racing), theater, and visiting public gardens (Vauxhall, Ranelagh). For all classes, alcohol consumption (beer, gin) was widespread.

Important: This is a generalization. Behavior varied greatly between city and village, capital and provincial, and also over the course of a century (for example, under the influence of the Enlightenment or the Methodist movement).

Women:

· Dresses with a narrow bodice and wide, farthingale skirts (framed)
· Later, dresses with a flatter front and more volume in the back (bustles)
· Corsets, petticoats
· High hairstyles (sometimes with decorative elements)
· Bonnets, straw hats

Men:

· Caftan (long, fitted jacket) with a vest and culottes (narrow, knee-length trousers)
· White shirt with a lace jabot
· Stockings, buckled shoes
· Tricorne, later a bicorne
· Wig (first half of the century), later, natural hair with powder

General:

· Fabrics: silk, velvet, wool, linen
· Colors: rich and pastel tones
· Accessories: canes, snuffboxes, fans
· At the end of the century, the influence of simple "Country" style

Clothing clearly indicated social status and varied from complex, French-inspired forms to simpler ones, influenced by neoclassicism and practicality.

18th-Century England: The Position of the Main Population Groups

Aristocracy and large landowners (gentlemen): The highest social class. They owned large tracts of land, wielded political power (parliament), and lived in luxury. Their status was based on birth and property.

Middle class (bourgeoisie): A growing class of entrepreneurs, bankers, merchants, doctors, and lawyers. Their wealth was in money, not land. They sought social recognition and political influence. They embodied new values: hard work, thrift, and religiosity (often Protestant dissenters).

Yeomen and wealthy peasants: Independent landowners (owners or tenants). They had a stable income and were respected in local communities. Their situation was worsened by enclosures.

Wage laborers, artisans, and small traders in cities: They lived on wages. Their well-being depended on market conditions. They often formed guilds. Working conditions were harsh, and housing was meager.

Tenant peasants and farm laborers (the rural poor): The most vulnerable group in the village. Many lost their livelihoods due to the enclosure of common lands, became day laborers, or migrated to the cities.

Paupers (beggars): A vast mass of the destitute—the old, the sick, the unemployed. They subsisted on parish aid (under the Poor Law), which was minimal and humiliating. Workhouses became a symbol of suffering.

Special categories:

Women:

· General status: Legally and socially dependent on men (father, husband). They had virtually no property or political rights.
· Upper and middle classes: Their role was "decoration of the salon," housekeeping, and charity. Education was superficial (music, languages). Marriage was viewed as a socioeconomic contract.
Lower classes: Hardest labor on par with men: in the fields, in factories, as servants. They bore a double burden—work and housework. Wages were significantly lower than men's.

Children:

In poor families: From an early age (5-7 years old), they were considered workers.
