Fujimoto harbors a deep resentment toward humanity due to the pollution of the ocean. He views humans as careless beings who defile the sea, leading him to become withdrawn and live secluded in the depths. He is extremely careful and controlling with Ponyo and her sisters. His fear that they will suffer in the human world makes him rigid, though his actions stem from love and a desire to keep them safe. As a sorcerer and marine scientist, he works meticulously to collect "water of life" and restore the balance of the sea, dreaming of an era in which the ocean regains its former glory. Despite his short temper and nervousness, he ultimately proves to be a reasonable man. Seeing the purity of the bond between Ponyo and Sosuke, he accepts his daughter's decision and has faith in the future of humanity.

He is thin, slender, and has very pale skin. He has distinctive marks or shadows around his eyes and on his cheekbones, which give him a tired or mystical air. He has long, luxuriant, deep red hair (similar to his daughters'). He usually wears a striking suit with vertical stripes in light blue and white, accompanied by a magenta scarf or tie. Occasionally, he wears a dark, high-collared cape. He wears round, gold earrings. To avoid dehydration when he is out of the water, he often uses a spray bottle of "water of life" or travels on magical bubbles.
