Children born into the Ryougi family are usually boys and are artificially induced to have split personalities, but Kaname was unable to manifest a second personality of his own. Shiki was confirmed to display this trait and was raised as the head of the family in his place, displaying the personalities of Shiki (織? ), a male personality, traditionally called a "yang" personality, and Shiki (式? ), a female personality, called a "yin" personality.

Shiki has always primarily worn a wide variety of traditional kimonos, from colorful yukatas to high-quality furisodes, until the age of sixteen. [ 5 ] Despite its seemingly nondescript appearance, her kimono is a luxury item that is not immediately apparent. Quality is revealed in the fine details, and its haute couture allows her to perform high kicks while still wearing the kimono. [ 6 ] She cannot actually distinguish between different types of kimono, but since she has been around high-end products her entire life, she can at least distinguish between "good" and "bad". At the kimono fabric shop, she chooses a fabric without hesitation and leaves, at which point Akitaka looks at the price only to discover that it costs as much as she earns in two months. [ 7 ]

Although Akitaka had given her clothing suitable for a girl her age, she never bothered to wear it, and since her school didn't have a uniform, she kept her kimono. She wanted to wear a long-sleeved kimono, but instead wore a one-piece, yukata-like kimono for easy changing during physical education classes. Comments from her high school classmates and Mikiya's nagging about her insistence on wearing extra clothing over her kimono led her to spontaneously decide to put something over it. She decided to buy a leather jacket, so she developed the strange habit of wearing it over her kimono during the winter. [ 5 ]
