He belongs to a family of swordsmen who for centuries were part of the Defense Forces against Kaiju, but with technological advancements, the creation of firearms, and the increasing size of the Kaiju that appeared, swords ceased to be used to exterminate them. His father, who had retired from killing Kaiju, asked him to give up his dream of joining the Defense Forces. Everyone told him to give up, that "the age of swords is over," but he still didn't stop training with his sword, managing to enter the Defense Forces, finding his place in the third division as vice-captain, alongside Mina Ashiro, the captain of the third division. He complements her, since she only fights with firearms and has no skill with bladed weapons, while Hoshina only fights with swords and has no skill with firearms. Over time, he also develops a rivalry with the captain of the first division, Gen Narumi.

Breathing Mask: Soshiro uses a breathing mask in battle. Numbers' Weapon 10 (10, Nanbāzu Jū-gō): Soshiro's personal Numbers' weapon, provided by Izumo Tech, is a special combat suit fabricated from the body of Kaiju No. 10. This suit features light purple scale armor with green outlines, a long mechanical tail, and No. 10's signature eye in the center of the chest. It is the first Numbers' weapon in the history of the Defense Forces with a will of its own.
Twin Swords: Marked SW-2033 and provided by Izumo Tech, Hoshina's personal weapons are a pair of twin swords. The blades are sharp and durable enough to cut through incredibly tough Kaiju such as Kaiju No. 8 and Kaiju No. 10. She is shown to have multiple swords as backup.
Katana: Marked SW-1023, Soshiro uses a single katana as his secret weapon, despite it being a weapon usually wielded by his older brother. The blade is sharp enough to easily cut through Kaiju No. 12. He is shown to have several katanas as backup. Enhanced Strength: He possesses incredible physical strength, capable of cutting through the incredibly tough hide of Kaiju No. 8 with ease.
