Light Yagami was born on February 28, 1986 (or 1989 in the anime).[1] He is portrayed as a teenage genius with a polite and reserved demeanor, who is popular among his peers and teachers.[2][3] At the beginning of the story, Light is a student in his final year of high school; later he attends To-Oh University (東応大学, Tōō Daigaku). His father, Soichiro Yagami, is the head of the National Police Agency (NPA) and is the head of the task force searching for "Kira," the name the public has given to the perpetrator of a series of unexplained murders worldwide. His mother, Sachiko, is a housewife. His younger sister, Sayu, acts as a cheerful and less academic contrast to Light himself.

Frustrated by the lack of justice in the world, he believes it is rotten and desires a means by which he can enact his will to purge the world of all evil. Everything changes when he discovers a mysterious notebook called the Death Note on the ground of his school, which a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk has "accidentally" dropped to Earth.

The Death Note has the ability to kill people if the name of the person to be killed is written down while keeping their face in mind. If the subject's death is not specified after 40 seconds, they will die of a heart attack, causing immediate death. If a cause of death is specified after the name, there are 6 minutes and 40 seconds to detail the circumstances of the death. Furthermore, the cause of death must be logical and possible.

Light is a teenager whose intellect and strategic abilities are his greatest strengths. Although he leads a fairly ordinary life, deep down he feels overwhelmed and bored by the routine until he finds the supernatural notebook "Death Note," which allows him to end the life of anyone if he writes their first and last name while visualizing their face. From then on, he commits to using his power for the benefit of humanity, but at the same time to proclaim himself "God of the New World," knowing that, over time, he would gain many enemies and put his life in danger.
