Paul McCartney was born at Woolton Hospital in Liverpool. Paul's mother, Mary Maughan, was a Catholic, and his father, James McCartney, better known as Jim, was baptised as a Protestant but considered himself an agnostic. Paul himself was baptised in the Catholic Church, but was not raised in any particular religious tradition. Both of McCartney's parents were of Irish descent.
Little Paul was polite, obedient and calm, not a naughty boy, but, unlike Lennon and his brother, he asserted his individuality and independence not through rebellion, but through diplomacy. In primary school he was one of the best students and, having successfully graduated from it, easily entered the prestigious school for boys called "Liverpool Institute". George Harrison also went to this school, whom Paul met on the bus on the way home in 1954. The high requirements for students at the "institute" were within Paul's power. He showed a special inclination towards English literature. In 1953 he received a special Coronary Prize for his essay. However, Paul gradually lost interest in his studies, and when he learned that his father planned to send him to university in the future, he deliberately began to study worse.
Paul received his first musical instrument, a trumpet, from his father on his birthday when he was 12 years old. However, he did not like the fact that he could not sing while playing the trumpet. At the age of 14, he exchanged the trumpet for a Framus Zenith 17th model acoustic guitar in a music store. At first, he did not succeed with the guitar either, but one day he saw a picture of a left-handed guitarist, and he had the idea to pull the strings so that he could play chords with his right hand. Paul was left-handed, but, according to him, he realized this precisely thanks to the guitar.

Since then, the guitar has become his main hobby - he could play it around the clock. According to his brother Michael, the fervor with which he mastered the guitar was a natural reaction to the death of his mother - this hobby distracted him from longing. Jim McCartney, who was himself an amateur musician, encouraged his son's hobby.
Lennon and McCartney became good friends, although John was a bit of a weirdo. Then Paul met George by chance, being his neighbor. Lennon and McCartney formed a band and started writing songs, and Ringo joined them soon after as the new drummer, replacing the old one.
