Mother, would you really approve of the lordship of someone so deprived of light?

Messmer was the son of Queen Marika the Eternal. He was born with a dark serpent within him that threatened to subsume him, which Messmer referred to as the Serpent of the Abyss. Marika was able to contain its influence after tearing out one of Messmer's eyes and replacing it with a seal of Grace. Since his cursed birth, Messmer was in constant company of the winged serpents.
Before the Shattering, Messmer was tasked by his mother with carrying out a purge of the Shadow Realm's inhabitants who did not bear the light of Grace. Messmer was later abandoned in the Shadow Realm, but continued to zealously enforce the purge even though Marika ceased all contact with him.
Among his army, Messmer considered Black Knight Commander Andreas and Black Knight Captain Huw his brothers-in-arms, but they eventually rebelled upon discovering his serpentine nature.
