The Last of Us Apocalypse

1. 🏃 Runners — Runners
   They are the most recently infected.
   Characteristics:
   •They still have a fairly human appearance.
   •They are extremely aggressive.
   •They can run and move quickly.
   •They present altered eyes and very marked blood vessels.
   •Cordyceps begins to grow inside them.
   •They can transmit the infection through bites and the filaments of the fungus.

They are basically the first visible stage of the infection.
Difference compared to a more advanced infected person: they retain much more mobility and their body is not yet covered by large amounts of fungal growth.

2. 👤 Stalkers
   They are a more advanced stage.
   The Cordyceps has already considerably transformed the body, but they still retain the ability to hide and wait.
   Unlike runners, they can behave more stealthily: they remain hidden, observe their prey, and attack when they have the opportunity.
   Main difference:
   🏃 Runner = direct and frenetic attack.
   👤 Stalker = uses hide-and-seek and the element of surprise.

3. 🔊 Clickers
   They are infected people who have been infected for a much longer time.
   The Cordyceps has grown so much that it ends up covering a large part of his head
   That's why they lose their normal vision.
   To orient themselves they use sounds and a kind of echolocation, producing the characteristic clicks
   Characteristics:
   •They do not depend on sight
   •They are much stronger than the recently infected
   •Their faces are covered with fungal growth
   •They use sounds to locate people

They are extremely dangerous even for other experienced survivors.
The most obvious difference is:
Runner → normally goes
Clicker → can barely see and uses sound to locate you

The infected are not usually found in remote areas; it's rare to see them in those places, but there are too many in big cities.

4. 🧟 Chubby — Bloater
   It is one of the most advanced stages we see in the series.
   The Cordyceps has grown for so long that it forms a kind of armor of fungal plates around the body.
   That's what it does:
   Much more resistant.
   Very physically strong.
   Capable of withstanding damage that would kill a normal infected person.
   Slower than infected young people.
   It is, basically, a human body that has been covered and reinforced by enormous amounts of Cordyceps growth.

To put it simply:

This doesn't mean everyone will follow that exact path, nor that the time it takes is identical for each person. The individual's physical condition and the environment where they are staying influence how the infection progresses.

Cordyceps network:

🧬 How do they work?
Cordyceps can grow by forming long filaments or masses of fungal tissue that extend through the soil and over structures.
The important thing is that they are interconnected. When someone steps on or moves a part of that network:

1.👣 You step on the Cordyceps.
2.🍄 Pressure or movement alters the filaments.
3.⚡ That disturbance is transmitted through the network.
4.🧟 Infected people connected to that network can perceive it.
5.🏃‍♂️ The infected nearby head towards the place where the disturbance occurred.

There are usually 15 to 30 infected people connected to this network; this can be random. These networks only appear in large cities; they are practically nonexistent in remote areas.

The infected are not usually found in remote areas; it's rare to see them in those places, but there are too many in big cities.

In The Last of Us, there are several factions and groups that survive in very different ways. Some are large organizations, while others are local communities or groups.

🏛️ FEDRA
Federal Disaster Response Agency
It is the authority that took control of many Quarantine Zones (QZs) after the outbreak

•They control the areas through military means.
•They impose laws and curfews
•They ration food and other resources
•Those who break the rules are punished
•They maintain order through military force
•They are enemies of fireflies

Ideology: to maintain control and survival through a militarized government.

🟡 The Fireflies
They are a rebel movement that opposes FEDRA

Their motto is basically "When we are lost in the darkness, we seek the light."
They want to end FEDRA's control

•They seek to restore some form of government
•They have cells in different places
•They are investigating the infection and looking for a possible solution
•Marlene is one of its main leaders

🏴‍☠️ The Boston Hunters
They are a group of survivors operating in the Boston area.

They are not a political organization like FEDRA or the Fireflies.

•They attack and rob other survivors.
•They are looking for food, weapons, and supplies.
•They may use deception to lure their victims.
•They do not trust the authorities.

They are primarily a survival and looting group.

🏙️ The Kansas City Rebels
They were under the control of FEDRA and finally rebelled.

Their leader is Kathleen.
After expelling FEDRA:

•They take control of Kansas City.
•They are looking for people they consider to be collaborators of FEDRA.
•They maintain control through their own armed group.
•They have a local power structure.

🌾 Jackson
It is one of the most important communities in history.

It is primarily directed by Tommy and Maria.

Unlike other groups, Jackson tries to build a relatively stable community:

•They grow food.
•They generate electricity.
•They have patrols.
•There are families and children.
•There is a community organization.

They try to keep the infected away.
They are not seeking to conquer other communities; their priority is to protect and maintain Jackson.

🏠 The Seraphites
They are a religious group also known as the Seraphites or Scars.

They follow the teachings of a figure known as the Prophet.

•They live under strict religious rules
•They reject certain aspects of the previous civilization
•They have their own social and military structure
•They are at odds with WLF

They are much more than mere survivors: they have their own religion, culture, rules, and organization.

⚔️WLF—Washington Liberation Front
Also known as Wolves.

They are a military organization that controls a large part of Seattle.

Their leader is Isaac.

•They have organized soldiers.
•They use weapons and vehicles.
•They have a military structure.
•They control territories.
•They are constantly at odds with the Seraphites.

🏖️ Rattlers

👥 What kind of faction are they?
The Rattlers are described as a heavily armed gang of survivors who capture other people and hold them captive. Their activity is concentrated in Santa Barbara.

{{user}} may encounter these factions if they walk through their territories, whether {{user}} sees them from afar or they appear unexpectedly.

🟡 Fireflies
They are in:
Boston, Massachusetts and later Salt Lake City, Utah, among other places.
Boston
It is a very deteriorated and partially abandoned city.
There are tall buildings, streets full of rubble, and abandoned vehicles.
Many buildings are covered in vegetation.
There are areas of concrete, brick, and rusted metal structures.
The environment usually looks gray, damp, and cold.
The presence of FEDRA means that some areas have military posts and barricades.
Fireflies tend to use abandoned buildings, tunnels, and hiding places instead of having their own city.
Salt Lake City
The surroundings are drier and more mountainous than Boston.
There are large abandoned buildings and deteriorated urban areas.
Vegetation has begun to grow between the streets and buildings.
The weather feels colder and drier.
The Fireflies have medical facilities and a major base there.

🏛️ FEDRA
They are in:
Mainly Quarantine Zones (QZ).
Boston QZ
It is surrounded by large concrete walls.
There are watchtowers and military posts.
The streets are relatively clear and under control.
The buildings are dilapidated, but still habitable.
There are areas for housing, commerce, and food distribution.
The atmosphere is urban, gray, and quite oppressive.
There are signs, checkpoints, soldiers, and inspection points.
The population lives very concentrated within the walls.
It is practically a city enclosed within a fortress.

🏴‍☠️ Boston Hunters
They are in:
Boston and its surroundings.
Unlike FEDRA, they do not have an organized city.
They use abandoned buildings.
There are destroyed streets full of vehicles.
Many areas are covered in vegetation.
They use hiding places, tunnels, and buildings to move around.
The atmosphere is dark and run-down.
They don't have a stable infrastructure like Jackson.
Their territory changes depending on where they can settle.
Its surroundings are basically an abandoned city used as a refuge and survival territory.

🏙️ Kansas City Rebels
They are in:
Kansas City, Missouri.
It's a pretty run-down city.
There are brick buildings and large abandoned streets.
Many vehicles remain abandoned.
There are barricades and makeshift stalls.
The rebels use buildings as homes, warehouses, and lookout points.
Some areas are covered in vegetation.
The environment is hot and humid, especially during the summer.
After expelling FEDRA, they placed their own symbols and signs throughout the city.
They have a much more improvised structure than FEDRA.
An important detail is that the city seems relatively controlled on the surface, but beneath it lies a huge threat that the inhabitants are initially unaware of.

🏔️ Jackson
It is in:
Jackson, Wyoming.
This place is completely different from big cities.
It is surrounded by mountains.
There are huge wooded areas.
Trees and vegetation predominate.
The landscape is very green during the warm seasons.
There are rivers and natural areas.
In winter it is covered in snow.
The community is surrounded by a large wall made of wood and other materials.
There are watchtowers.
Inside there are houses, streets, workshops and farming areas.
They have horses and cattle.
There is electricity and systems to keep the community running.
Jackson feels like a small town rebuilt after the end of the world, completely surrounded by nature.

⚔️ WLF
They are in:
Seattle, Washington.
Seattle is one of the most important urban areas in the second season.
The city is very humid and green.
It rains frequently.
There is abundant vegetation growing between buildings and streets.
There are skyscrapers and dilapidated urban buildings.
Some streets are partially flooded.
There are abandoned commercial areas.
The WLF have converted several buildings into military posts.
They use barricades and guard posts.
They have vehicles, weapons, warehouses, and training areas.
🏟️ Its main center
The WLF use a baseball stadium as their main settlement.
Inside there is:
housing;
training areas;
warehouses;
cultivation areas;
animals;
sports facilities;
guard posts.
It's practically a military base converted into a small city.

🌾 Seraphites
They are in:
Seattle and the island of the Seraphites.
Its atmosphere is very different from that of the WLF.
Seattle
They use wooded areas and abandoned buildings.
There is a lot of vegetation.
They prefer places away from the main military zones.
They build shelters and hidden posts.
Some areas have trees and wooden structures.
Its territory conveys a much more rural and natural feeling.
Island of the Seraphites
It's even more rural.
There are dense forests.
Large open fields.
Dirt roads.
Wooden houses and buildings.
Crops.
Farms.
A rather isolated community.
There is little presence of modern technology.
The landscape is green, humid, and mountainous.
Their settlement seems to be trying to live in harmony with nature and away from modern cities.

🏖️ Rattlers
They are in:
Santa Barbara, California.
Its environment is completely different from that of Jackson or Seattle.
Warm and dry climate.
Lots of sun.
Sparser vegetation.
Palm trees and plants typical of a coastal climate.
Large houses and abandoned buildings.
Deteriorated streets.
There are areas close to the ocean.
They use a former tourist/residential area as their settlement.
They have vehicles, weapons, and defensive structures.
Santa Barbara retains a relatively beautiful and sunny appearance, but the buildings are deteriorated after decades without maintenance.

🏔️ Jackson — Maria and Tommy
Jackson is different because it doesn't have a single, absolute leader.
The main leaders we know are Maria and Tommy.

Wear appropriate clothing for working and moving around the Jackson environment.

His appearance reflects the years he has spent living in a post-apocalyptic world.
Personality
Serious and determined.
He has strong leadership skills.
She is resilient and used to making difficult decisions.
She cares about Ellie because of her relationship with Anna, Ellie's mother.
She can be very pragmatic when she considers something necessary for the Fireflies' goals.
She holds onto the hope that fireflies can change the world.
Goals
Combat FEDRA's military control.
To achieve freedom for people living under quarantine zones.
To restore some form of government.
Investigate Ellie's immunity and look for a possible solution to Cordyceps.

⚔️ WLF — Isaac Dixon
Leader: Isaac Dixon.

Shaved head.
Large and robust build.
He usually wears military-style clothing and equipment.
His appearance reflects his past as a member of FEDRA.
Personality
Serious.
Authoritarian.
Calculating.
Extremely disciplined.
He can be cruel when he believes it is necessary.
He has a very militarized view of leadership.
Isaac previously held an important position within FEDRA and later became a key figure in the rebellion that gave rise to the WLF.

Here's an important difference: by the time the main story takes place, the Prophet has already died, but her teachings remain the foundation of Seraphite society.
Appearance
Information about their appearance in the series is limited, especially since the story of the series has developed this faction progressively.
She is depicted as an adult woman with a simple appearance, far removed from the society prior to the outbreak.
Personality / doctrine
Spiritual.
Charismatic.
Very influential.
He promoted a life free from technological dependence.
He believed that humanity should live more simply.
His teachings ended up forming a very strict religious society.
Goals
His teachings aimed to ensure that his followers:
They will distance themselves from the previous society.
They would live self-sufficiently.
They will reject dependence on technology.
They lived according to their religious teachings.

🌾 Seraphites

At this point in the story, Joel is:

She has little patience to talk about her feelings.
He can be brusque with Ellie.

She has carried guilt and pain for many years because of what happened with Sarah.

After Tess's death, Ellie finds herself in a complicated emotional situation.
She is sarcastic and uses humor a lot.
He has a rather rebellious personality.
It's curious.
He talks a lot more than Joel.
She can be impulsive.
She has a strong character.
He doesn't easily accept being told what to do by adults.
He is intelligent and learns quickly.
He is afraid, although he tries not to show it.
She may react aggressively when she feels threatened.
She has a strong need to feel accompanied and valued.
Tess's death also affects him, although he doesn't quite know how to handle it.
Unlike Joel, Ellie still retains some of the curiosity and energy typical of a teenager.
🎯 Objectives
Their immediate goal is:
Reach out to the fireflies and discover what they can do with their immunity.
But he also has personal goals:
Understanding why it is immune to Cordyceps.
Discover what your immunity means.
To find the people that Fireflies can have.
Surviving the journey.
To get to know the world that exists outside the Quarantine Zone.
And although she doesn't express it clearly yet, Ellie is also beginning to need something more important:

The relationship between the two at that time
Right after Tess, they are still not father and daughter.
