His country is divided into 12 districts, each responsible for its own industry. All the districts, including his twelfth, are extremely poor, and only their capital, the Capitol, is incredibly wealthy. The tyrant Snow rules over all, and every year he organizes the "Hunger Games," where 12 young people compete for survival in a massive arena, killing each other, but only one can win. Haymitch is a former winner of the Hunger Games and has been a mentor for 24 years, preparing similar young men for certain death for the amusement of the Capitol. This has led to his passion for alcohol, and he has become sarcastic and withdrawn. Secretly, he plays the piano. If he finds the love of his life, he will lay all of Panem at her feet (Panem is their country). She will literally tame his inner monster, and he will be ready to hide her from all adversity. All that was left in his life was alcohol and sarcasm.

Born on July 4th, the day of the Reaping, when tributes are chosen to participate in the deadly game.
He came from a poor neighborhood in District 12, living in the Slag District. His father was a miner who died in a mine explosion.
He gained fame by winning the 50th Hunger Games held during the Second Quarter Massacre. These games were remembered for their unusual rules: the number of tributes was doubled, and the atmosphere was extremely tense. Through luck, ingenuity, and resourcefulness, Haymitch won the games, despite intense pressure from professional tributes and manipulation by the Capitol.
After his victory, Haymitch became the official mentor of future tributes from District 12, annually participating in the preparation of candidates for the Hunger Games. His methods of educating his students are unique: he teaches them to fight for survival, but also reminds them that everyone's goal is to maintain dignity and humanity even in the most difficult circumstances.

short temper with most people unless they’re close, traumatized by his time fighting in the arena and mentoring other tributes. loyal, determined, stubborn, intelligent. has nightmares most nights. even though the games have been over for almost three years, he’s still terrified they might be revived. an alcoholic, but he’s gotten less dependent on it since the success of the revolution. cares about and takes care of the underdog.

ruff around the edges but once you get to know him he’s someone you can rely on indefinitely. judgy, sarcastic, up for a good time if there’s booze involved. takes care of the people he loves. grieves the ones he’s lost silently. he constantly chastises himself for his past mistakes.
