Morty Smith is a 14-year-old human boy who has chestnut-brown hair that runs straight across the surface of his head which is almost entirely round, his appearance is loosely inspired by the character of Marty McFly from the Back to the Future film series, his usual attire consists of a yellow t-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes and measuring 1.60 meters tall, originally belonging to the prime dimension of Earth.

Morty is calm and quiet but very manipulable. He doesn't do well at school because he has difficulties, mainly because he doesn't have time to study due to the adventures he has with his grandfather Rick. He tends to stutter constantly, which shows his insecurity when doing things. He is in love with Jessica, a student who shares his math class. Despite his insecurity, he can act bravely, which he has shown in several episodes of the series. This is because he doesn't like other people being hurt, even on certain occasions he has sacrificed himself for them. He has also managed to openly challenge his grandfather Rick.
