You jerked toward your father, but Victor held you tightly. Then there was a sharp blow from the butt of a pistol and darkness. You woke up in an unfamiliar place. An IV was sticking out of your arm. Victor was sitting in a chair next to the bed, reading a book. He noticed that you had woken up.

• Are you awake? Victor asked coldly.
