Alexander Menshikov was exiled to Siberia (to the town of Beryozov) as a result of a swift palace conspiracy orchestrated by his political opponents, allied with the young Emperor Peter II. The main reasons for his downfall were: 1. Peter II's personal hatred. Menshikov established total control over the 11-year-old emperor: he moved him to live in his palace, restricted his money and entertainment, and forced him to study for hours. The final straw was Peter's forced betrothal to Menshikov's daughter, Maria, whom the boy openly disliked. The tsar felt like a prisoner and sought an excuse to get rid of his guardian.
2. The Favorite's Serious Illness. In the summer of 1727, Menshikov fell gravely ill and withdrew from state affairs for several weeks. His enemies, the Dolgorukov princes and Vice-Chancellor Andrei Osterman, immediately took advantage of this opportunity. They gained unimpeded access to Peter II and finally convinced the teenager that Menshikov was a tyrant who had usurped power and despised the royal family.
3. Conflict over money
A major scandal erupted: a guild of St. Petersburg merchants presented Peter II with a large sum of money (approximately 9,000 chervonets). Menshikov confiscated the money from the tsar, declaring that "the emperor is still too young to spend such sums." Peter flew into a rage and declared, "I'll show you which of us is the emperor!"
4. Accusations of betrayal
Menshikov's enemies skillfully reminded Peter II that it was Menshikov who had once signed the death warrant for the boy's father, Tsarevich Alexei. For the young tsar, this became a decisive argument.
Result:
In September 1727, Peter II signed a decree placing Menshikov under house arrest. Soon, the "semi-sovereign ruler" was stripped of all his colossal wealth, titles, and decorations, and exiled with his family to the remote Siberian town of Beryozov, where he died two years later.

Elizabeth Petrovna was Peter II's aunt (she was the youngest daughter of Peter I by Catherine I, and Peter II was Peter I's grandson).
Their relationship was very close and bright:
Age difference: Elizabeth was only six years older than her nephew (she was born in 1709, he in 1715). Shared interests: As teenagers, they were inseparable. Elizabeth, like Peter II, loved horseback riding, joyful celebrations, balls, and long hours of hunting.
Marriage rumors: Those around them noticed their strong mutual affection. The young Emperor Peter II faced two attempts to marry due to the political interests of the ruling clans. Both times, the brides were representatives of the most influential families of the time.

1. Maria Menshikova (first bride)
   Who she is: The daughter of the uncrowned ruler of Russia, His Serene Highness Prince Alexander Menshikov. She was four years older than Peter.
   How it happened: Menshikov literally forced the 11-year-old emperor to betroth his daughter to him in May 1727. Maria received the title "Her Imperial Highness the Betrothed Bride." How it ended: Peter couldn't stand Maria and cried during the betrothal. A few months later, Menshikov fell seriously ill, and his enemies seized the opportunity to turn the tsar against their favorite. In September 1727, Menshikov was stripped of all ranks and exiled to Siberia with his family. The betrothal was annulled.
2. Ekaterina Dolgorukova (second bride)
   Who she was: The daughter of Prince Alexei Dolgorukov and the sister of Ivan Dolgorukov, Peter II's best friend and favorite. She was three years older than the Tsar and was already in love with another man (Count Millesimo).
   How it happened: The Dolgorukov family, who had succeeded Menshikov to the throne, used force and intrigue to coerce the tsar into proposing to Catherine. A lavish engagement took place in November 1729. The outcome: Peter II had no feelings for his bride and repeatedly delayed the wedding, scheduled for January 1730. A few days before the wedding, the young emperor contracted smallpox and died on the very day scheduled for the wedding.

🌍 Where have you been in Europe?
Peter II never traveled outside of Russia. Unlike his great-grandfather, he never traveled throughout Europe. His travels were limited to trips between St. Petersburg and Moscow (in 1728, he effectively moved the capital back to Moscow, where he died of smallpox in January 1730).

🐎 The main favorite.
The emperor's closest favorite and friend was the young Prince Ivan Alekseevich Dolgorukov. Seven years Peter's senior, he was known for his cheerful disposition, and he loved carousing and idleness. Ivan completely dominated the teenage tsar, taking him on endless hunting trips and weaning him off from governing the country. The Dolgorukovs even tried to marry Peter to Ivan's sister, Catherine, but the wedding never took place.

🤵 Appearance: Foreign ambassadors noted that Peter II was very handsome for his age, tall, and physically fit. He looked older than his years. He had regular, noble features, but his gaze was often arrogant, sad, and sullen.
In appearance and character, Peter II was most similar to his great-grandfather, Peter I (Peter the Great), as well as to his German relatives on his mother's side. From his mother, Princess Sophia Charlotte, he inherited: European refinement: Peter II had very regular, noble, classical facial features, which led to him being called "angelically handsome." Hair and skin color: Unlike his dark-haired and swarthy grandfather, the boy possessed a softer, European phenotype, with white skin, light ash-blond hair, and bright blue eyes.

🎭 Character and hobbies.
Peter II had a capricious, stubborn, and willful character. He recognized his absolute power early on and tolerated no objections. He was lazy and detested intellectual work and books. At the same time, he was madly in love with hunting, dogs, feasts, and carousing. He could indulge in hunting for weeks, completely forgetting about state affairs.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Whom did you love most in the family?
Peter II's closest and dearest love was for his elder sister, Grand Duchess Natalia Alexeyevna. She was a year older, distinguished by her intelligence and kindness, and was his only true friend and advisor. Her death from tuberculosis in 1728 was a terrible blow to the young emperor, after which he withdrew into himself.

👑 Royal title.
From birth, he bore the title of Grand Duke. From May 6 (17), 1727, his official title was Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias. He became the third emperor in Russian history and the last representative of the Romanov dynasty in the direct male line.

The boy grew up in St. Petersburg. His upbringing was largely neglected: his grandfather, Peter I, disliked him due to a conflict with his father.
