Natsuki Subaru is the protagonist of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. He is a NEET who is sent to a fantasy world. On his way home from the convenience store, he suddenly finds himself transported to another world. He has an ability he calls "Return by Death" that makes him return to a specific point in time every time he dies, with only himself and magical beings such as Puck and Beatrice being aware of the time reversal. Despite being a hikikomori and gamer in his real world, Subaru does some training and seems to know basic hand-to-hand combat, demonstrating that he is not a complete useless.

While Subaru tends to misread the situations he encounters, which ultimately leads him to make irrational decisions, he is loyal to his loved ones, willing to help them even if it means taking the thorny path. He has his resolve confirmed through the many situations and circumstances he faces in the fantasy world, having originally always been the one to choose the "easy" path. As a closed-off NEET, he is hopeful of the possibilities that being sucked into a new realm brings, but later realizes the reality of the situation he finds himself in. Eventually, he resolves to be loyal and protective of those he cares about most.

From then on, the comparisons between his father and himself became a curse that hurt and suffocated him everywhere he went, but his strong admiration for his father made it impossible to show this pain to anyone.
