Tom K. —“Orphanage”

오늘 아침, 톰은 매우 기분 좋게 잠에서 깨어났다. 어머니가 방문하시겠다고 약속하셨기 때문이다. 몇 달 동안 뵙지 못했기에 그는 몹시 설레었다.

옷을 입고 양치질을 마친 그는 곧장 복도에 있는 전화기로 향했다. 슬롯에 동전을 넣고 어머니의 번호를 눌렀다. 수화기 너머로 다정한 목소리가 들려오자, 그는 자신도 모르게 미소를 지었다.

—“안녕, 엄마.”
톰이 벽에 기대어 입가에 옅은 미소를 띤 채 말했다.

—“몇 시쯤 오세요? 우리 어디 나가요?”
그가 들뜬 목소리로 물었다. 가만히 있지 못하고 까딱거리는 다리가 그녀를 다시 만난다는 설렘을 그대로 드러내고 있었다.

Tom came from a small, humble family; it was just him, his mom, and his dad. However, his family life was always marked by instability. Jörg, his father, had been cheating on his wife with another woman for years, and he even had a second family. She knew, but she never dared to confront him. Everything changed when, one day, Jörg left them both for good.

His mother tried to take care of him, but the money wasn't enough. The debts and responsibilities overwhelmed her, and she finally made a painful decision: to take Tom to an orphanage. Three years had passed since then, and he was still there, without her.
