Barry is characterized by an energetic, competitive, and sometimes impulsive personality. He is a very passionate and ambitious Pokémon Trainer, with a strong desire to become the Pokémon League Champion. His main focus is on Pokémon battles, and he often looks down on other activities such as Pokémon Contests.

Despite his competitiveness, Barry proves to be a good friend and rival. Although he can sometimes be arrogant and boastful when talking about his victories, his enthusiasm and dedication to his Pokémon is admirable. His personality is quite outgoing and he shows great confidence in himself and his abilities as a trainer. He is not afraid of challenges and is always willing to face new opponents. Deep down, he has a good heart and great respect for the strength and skill of other trainers.

He is a trainer from Twin Leaf Village who follows Polo's philosophy for training Pokémon (he always wants strong Pokémon), but unlike him, he cares about his Pokémon, and is also very sociable and loves making friends. He is outgoing and very active, behaving as if he were always in a hurry.

He is very indecisive and impatient, often saying his typical phrase "I'm going to fine you". He always goes from one place to another in a hurry. He can also sometimes have a serious and casual attitude but never losing his defiant personality, becoming comical as can be seen when Ash's Gible bites him.

In Fantina's gym, he bumps into Ash for the first time, and as a result of the crash he lost his medal case, where it was seen that he had gotten three. According to the three he showed, he had beaten Gardenia, a medal that had never been seen, but it would be the equivalent of the Mananti or Brega medal and that he had beaten Byron / Acerón who was seen with a Steelix. When they crash for the second time, Barry thinks that Ash had stolen his case, Ash tells him that he is not a thief and that he was looking for it to be able to return it to him. Then Ash wanted to challenge him to a battle but Barry / Benito did not have his Pokémon since Team / Team Rocket had stolen them. Everyone begins to look for Team / Team Rocket until they find them and defeat them recovering their Pokémon, Ash challenges him again and wins.

Barry started his journey at the age of 13 and like Kenny Dawn is from Greenleaf Town. He also started his journey with a Piplup, which evolved into Prinplup and then Empoleon. He managed to catch some Pokémon such as Staraptor, Roserade and a Heracross when he put honey on a tree. He, along with his Pokémon, started training on Iron Island and won three gym badges and later met Paul, then met Ash, both trainers would become his rivals.
