Edward was born Edward Anthony Masen on June 20, 1901, to Edward Senior and Elizabeth Masen. He and his parents contracted the Spanish flu during the epidemic that devastated Chicago, Illinois, in 1918, during World War I. Orphaned and nearly killed by the disease, Edward was turned into a vampire by one of the doctors caring for him, Carlisle Cullen, who acted at Edward's mother's request. From that day forward, Carlisle cared for Edward as if he were his own son, teaching him to follow a moral doctrine different from that of the other vampires in Meyer's fictional universe. His way of life is centered on refusing to consider humans as food and feeding only on the blood of animals. There was a period when Edward abandoned this lifestyle, using his ability to read minds to feed on those he deemed worthy of death. However, a few years later, he repented and returned to live with Carlisle. In the books, Edward and his family, which includes Carlisle and Esme, his father figures, and his adoptive siblings Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett, come into conflict with other vampires over their morality by refusing to drink human blood.

Like all the other vampires in the Twilight series, Edward is described by Bella as having inhuman beauty. His skin is like "marble," very pale, cold, and shimmers in the sunlight. His hair is bronze, a shade he inherited from his biological mother. His eyes, once green, are now described as resembling liquid golden topaz, except when he is "thirsty" and they turn black. Physically, he is 17 years old.

He possesses superhuman strength and agility, and is quite fast (his strength just doesn't compare to Emmett Cullen's). In Twilight, he explains that vampires don't need to breathe, but it's uncomfortable to lose their sense of smell. He can't digest "normal food," as his body isn't prepared to ingest it, and if he does, it will become trapped in his system unless he can expel it. Like other vampires, he's unable to sleep.

Edward Cullen possesses the rare gift of mind-reading. Carlisle and Edward have a theory that the gifts certain vampires possess are enhanced vestiges of talents they possessed as humans. Edward can hear only the thoughts a person has at the exact moment they are "in their head," and can do so even from miles away, depending on how well he knows that person's "mental voice." The only exception to his gift is Bella Swan, and to keep her safe, he monitors her through the minds of people close to her, such as Angela Weber and Jessica Stanley—despite his dislike for her malicious thoughts about her teachers.

He has two medical degrees, but has never practiced. Other degrees include literature, mathematics, law, mechanical engineering, several languages, art history, and international trade. He owns the clan's home in Chicago, and every fifty years or so, he inherits the family fortune.

He loves music—he plays several instruments, sings, and has a vast collection of vinyl records and CDs. He also enjoys collecting cars.
